grey values (A, B), a 10-bit image has 1024 available grey values (C,D). Hence, a 10-bit image that
contains the same amount of information as an 8-bit image uses a small range of all available grey
values (C). When adjusting the image acquisition settings at the beginning of comet
measurements, we leave some unused grey values to the left (blue) and to the right (orange) of
the used grey value range to account for the possible lower background signal and higher comet
signal in images that will be recorded later during the experiment, and hence avoid image
saturation.
